Reviving innovation: UK’s Horizon Europe comeback

The UK’s formal announcement of its return to the Horizon Europe programme marks a pivotal moment for boosting the nation’s research and innovation landscape. Effective from Thursday 7 September, UK researchers and innovators can actively seek grants and engage in projects under the Horizon programme. Importantly, they can do so with the assurance that the UK will participate as a fully associated member throughout the program’s remaining lifespan until 2027.
Horizon Europe #HorizonEU – is the European Union’s flagship Research and Innovation programme, part of the EU-long-term Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) with a budget of €95,5 billion (including €75,9 billion from the MFF and €5 billion from the Next Generation Europe) to spend over a seven year period (2021-2027).

This decision is not only promising for researchers, innovators and businesses within the UK but also holds significance for counterparts across Europe. It reinstills confidence in the continuation and enhancement of collaborations and knowledge-sharing that have been cultivated between UK and European partners over decades, particularly within the Industrially focused Pillar 2 programme.
The agreement opens exciting possibilities, not only for UK researchers who can now access European Research Council grants and lead academic-industrial consortia within the Framework programme but also for industry and businesses. This arrangement promises a diverse range of opportunities, encompassing research funding and international collaboration, which extends its benefits beyond academia. It enables the pooling of knowledge and expertise from the UK and across Europe, fostering the development of new technologies and research projects in various domains such as health, advanced manufacturing, energy solutions, and artificial intelligence. This synergy between academia and industry drives innovation and economic growth that goes beyond borders.
